Give your theme a performance budget

Dear reader,

No one decides to build a slow store. It happens by a thousand small yeses: one more app, one more script, one more heavy hero image. A performance budget is how you stop saying yes by default.

What a budget looks like

  • A page-weight ceiling you agree not to exceed
  • A cap on third-party scripts loading on every page
  • A rule that anything new has to earn its cost

It doesn't need to be elaborate. It needs to be written down and honoured, so "will this slow us down?" becomes a normal question before anything ships.

A performance budget doesn't make you fast. It stops you quietly getting slow.

Make it a habit

Check the budget when you add features, not once a year in a panic. When something new pushes you over, that's the prompt to remove something old or optimise what's there.

Treated as a standing rule rather than a rescue mission, speed looks after itself. The budget is the guardrail that keeps the store quick as it grows.

Best,
