Measure speed like your customers feel it

Dear brand owner,

You can score beautifully in a speed test and still have customers who feel the store dragging. That's because a one-off test on a fast machine isn't the same as what your real visitors experience.

Lab vs field

  • Lab data is a single test in controlled conditions. Useful for debugging.
  • Field data is gathered from real visitors, on their real devices and connections. Useful for the truth.

Chase only the lab score and you can polish a number nobody feels. Watch the field data and you're improving the actual experience.

A perfect lab score with slow field data means you optimised the test, not the store.

Where to look

Real-user metrics show up in tools like Search Console and your analytics. Watch them by device, because mobile is usually where the pain and the opportunity are.

Use lab tests to find and fix specific problems, but judge success on what real people experience. The field data is the customer's verdict, and it's the only one that pays.

Best,
