The customers who search are the ones ready to buy
Dear reader,
Here's a number that surprises most brand owners: the small slice of visitors who use your site search often convert at two or three times the rate of everyone else. They've told you exactly what they want. And yet site search is the feature almost nobody invests in.
Search is a customer telling you their intent
When someone types into that box, they're not browsing — they're hunting. If they find it, they buy. If they hit "no results", they leave, and you rarely get a second chance.
The common failures are all fixable:
- A typo returns nothing instead of the obvious match
- Searching a synonym ("trainers" vs "sneakers") finds nothing
- Results ignore stock, showing sold-out items first
- There's no way to filter a long result list down
Make the box earn its keep
You don't need to rebuild everything. A few deliberate improvements go a long way.
- Handle typos and synonyms — meet people where they type
- Show results as they type — speed feels like competence
- Rank by relevance and stock, not just recency
- Never dead-end — a "no results" page should suggest, not shrug
Your search box is a focus group running every hour of every day. The trick is to actually read what it's telling you.
Read the search reports
Your search query report is one of the most honest documents in your whole business. It shows what people want in their own words, what they can't find, and which searches lead nowhere. Mine it monthly and you'll spot product gaps and demand before any dashboard tells you.
Fix the box, then listen to it. If you'd like help turning your search data into a short list of quick wins, start with a FREE call.
