How to tell if you are actually ready to replatform
A quick honest one to start the year,
Most people ask me which platform they should move to long before they should. The harder, more useful question is whether you are ready to move at all. A migration will expose every gap in your operation, so it pays to find those gaps before you commit.
What readiness really looks like
I have watched plenty of migrations stall, and it is almost never the technology that trips people up. It is the lack of preparation around it.
- You know why you are moving, in one plain sentence
- Your product data is clean enough that you would trust it in a spreadsheet
- Someone internal owns the project and has real hours to give it
- You have a quiet trading period to launch into
If two or more of those are shaky, you are not ready yet. That is not a failure, it is just useful information.
The one-sentence test
Try finishing this out loud: "We are moving because our current platform cannot ______, and that is costing us ______."
If you cannot fill both blanks without waffling, you are chasing a feeling, not solving a problem.
A feeling is a perfectly good reason to review your store. It is a very expensive reason to rebuild it.
Get ready before you get quotes
The best thing you can do this month is boring groundwork:
- Audit your data so you know what actually needs to move
- Write down your must-keep features, not your wish list
- Block out team time honestly, allowing for the day job continuing
- Pick a launch window that avoids your busy season
Do that and every agency conversation afterwards gets cheaper and calmer, because you are negotiating from clarity instead of hope.
