Budgeting a migration honestly
Dear founder,
When people budget a replatform, they budget the build. But the build is rarely where a migration goes over. The overruns live in everything around it.
What the quote often leaves out
- Content and data cleanup and re-entry
- Redirects and SEO work to protect rankings
- Testing and QA across templates and devices
- Team time in reviews, training and sign-off
- The settling-in fortnight after launch
None of those are optional. Leaving them out of the budget doesn't make them free, it just makes them a nasty surprise halfway through.
A migration quote that only covers the build is quoting the tip of the iceberg.
Build in a buffer
Add contingency for the things you can't foresee, because there will be some. A sensible buffer isn't padding, it's the difference between finishing calmly and cutting corners at the end.
Price the whole job, not the shiny part, and the project stays on the rails. If you want a realistic picture before you commit, request pricing and we'll scope it properly.
Best,
