Your app stack is quietly costing you speed and money
Dear Shopify merchant,
Apps are wonderful until they aren't. Each one solves a real problem the day you install it, and then it sits there — charging you monthly, injecting scripts, and slowing your storefront by a few milliseconds you never notice individually but absolutely feel together.
The hidden bill
When I audit a store, I add up three costs for every app, not just the obvious one:
- The fee — the line on your monthly invoice
- The weight — scripts and styles loaded on every page
- The risk — one more thing that can break during a theme update
The first is annoying. The second and third are the ones that quietly hurt conversion.
A simple cull
You don't need a big project to fix this. Set aside an afternoon and go app by app.
- List them all with their monthly cost
- Open each one — when did you last actually use it?
- Kill the duplicates — you rarely need two review apps
- Replace with native — themes and checkout now do a lot for free
- Uninstall properly — check leftover code in the theme
If you can't explain in one sentence what an app earns you, it's a candidate for removal.
Fewer, better, faster
I've seen stores drop from thirty apps to twelve and load noticeably faster, with a smaller bill and fewer things to break. That's a rare win where you spend less and get more.
The goal isn't a minimalist badge of honour. It's a store where every app is clearly pulling its weight, and where a theme update doesn't fill you with dread. If your stack has crept past what you can name off the top of your head, request pricing for a focused audit and I'll tell you exactly what's safe to remove.
