Your category pages do more selling than you realise

Most shoppers don't land straight on a product. They arrive on a category or collection page, scan a grid of options, and decide in a few seconds whether it's worth digging deeper. If that page is confusing or overwhelming, they leave before they ever meet the product you worked so hard to perfect.

I find category pages are the most neglected pages in eCommerce. They feel like plumbing, so nobody gives them love. Yet they're doing quiet, constant work as the doorway to everything you sell.

What a good category page does

A strong collection page helps people narrow down without thinking too hard about it.

  • Shows filters that match how customers actually decide, like size, price and use
  • Lets people sort in a way that makes sense to them, not just to you
  • Keeps the grid clean, with clear prices and one strong image each
  • Puts the products most likely to sell where the eye lands first

That last point is the one people miss. The default order of your grid is a merchandising decision, whether you've thought about it or not. Leaving it on "newest" or a random shuffle wastes your best real estate.

A category page isn't a filing cabinet. It's a shop window, and the arrangement in the window decides what people walk in for.

Small changes, broad effect

The nice thing about category pages is leverage. A single improvement here touches every product beneath it, so a small percentage lift ripples across the whole range.

Start with your biggest, most-visited collection. Look at it as a first-time visitor with no idea what they want. Can they narrow the choice quickly? Do the filters actually work on mobile? Does the best stuff show up early? Fix the worst of it, then watch how deeper pages benefit.

Don't gold-plate it. You're not building the perfect page, you're removing the reasons people give up before they reach a product.
