Let people check out as guests
Dear founder,
Few things lose a first-time sale faster than a wall demanding an account before the customer can pay. They came to buy, not to join.
Why forced accounts hurt
- New customers don't trust you yet with a password they'll reuse elsewhere
- It adds steps and friction at the most fragile moment
- Most people don't want another login to forget
The irony is you can still get the account. You just ask at a better time.
Let them buy as a guest, then offer to save their details once the hard part is done.
A kinder pattern
- Guest checkout by default, front and centre
- Autofill and address lookup to keep it quick
- After payment, a one-tap "save these details for next time"
You'll capture plenty of accounts this way, from people who've already had a good experience rather than a suspicious one. And the customers who don't want an account still get to give you their money.
Make buying the easy path and saving details the optional one, never the other way round.
Best,
