Microcopy that quietly guides

Dear founder,

The smallest words in your store do a disproportionate amount of the work. Button labels, field hints, the line under the price, the message when something goes wrong. Nobody praises good microcopy, but everybody feels bad microcopy.

Where it earns its keep

  • Buttons that say what happens next ("Continue to payment"), not just "Submit"
  • Field hints that stop mistakes before they happen
  • Reassurance at the nervous moments ("Free returns within 30 days")
  • Errors that explain what to do, not just what went wrong

Each is tiny. Together they decide whether the journey feels smooth or full of little snags.

Good microcopy is invisible. You only notice it when it's missing and you're suddenly unsure what to do.

Write like a helpful human

Read your checkout and forms aloud. Anywhere you'd hesitate, or where the wording sounds like a database rather than a person, is a place to fix.

Clear, human, reassuring words cost almost nothing to change and quietly lift the whole experience. Sweat the small copy, because your customers feel it even when they can't name it.

Best,
